Mass Audubon developed the first edition of its invasive species management handbook in 2003 to facilitate invasive species management on its wildlife sanctuaries by bringing together relevant information from many sources. An updated second edition of the handbook was completed in June 2005. Copies of the 2005 edition of the handbook were distributed free of charge to over 200 conservation land managers thanks to a grant from the Conservation and Research Foundation.
The handbook includes general and species specific information on over 100 invasive species found in Massachusetts and adjacent states. This information is contained in documents collected from the websites of various government agencies, universities, and conservation organizations and brought together on a CD-ROM. In addition, a number of documents specifically developed by Mass Audubon for the assessment and management of invasive species on its 33,000-acre wildlife sanctuary system have been included. These may be useful to other organizations seeking to address invasive species issues on the lands that they manage.
This handbook contains the following information:
- Background Information on Invasive Species - including fact sheets on invasive species issues, information on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), literature on invasive species issues, and reports and management plans relating to invasive species impacts and management.
- Species Accounts - including information on over 100 invasive species present in Massachusetts and adjacent areas.
- Public Information and Interpretation - including documents describing alternatives to invasive plant species for ornamental use and documents useful for educating the public on invasive species issues.
- Regulations & Permits - including information on regulations that may pertain to invasive species management projects in Massachusetts, particularly projects involving work in wetlands or the use of pesticides.
- Management Techniques - including information on a variety of management techniques that have been used to control invasive species.
- Project Management & Monitoring - including information on assessing invasive plant infestations and monitoring the results of management efforts.
- Sources of Information and Contacts - including useful sources of information on invasive species and agency contact information.
- Mass Audubon Invasive Species Resources - including documents developed by Mass Audubon to facilitate invasive species inventory and management on its sanctuary system. These include Mass Audubon's strategy for managing invasive species, policy on pesticide use, and related documents.
