River Habitats Several different habitats can be observed along the river. Pools are inhabited by plants and animals that prefer quiet deep water with a sandy or muddy bottom. In contrast, creatures that prefer the fast waters of riffles have adapted to stronger currents and the rocky substrate to take advantage of the well-oxygenated water. Cool, shady, riverine forests contrast with warmer sunny marshes.
